Ogionsaa Festival
　The main part of the annual festival that adds heat to the summer of Kagoshima, “Ogionsaa,” took place at Yasaka Shrine and all over the Tenmonkan district in Kagoshima City. Some 2,000 people, wishing for the dispersal of evil spirits and for prosperous business, took part in the holy procession that displayed magnificent “mikoshi”-- portable shrines--and floats with a paper umbrella atop.
With the spirited chants of “Soiya, Soiya,” 21 mikoshis paraded through the street for about two kilometres. Mr. Akatsuka Teruyuki, a self-employed businessman from Kirishima City, said the festival “for breaking the jinx” was encouraging as many events had been cancelled due to the foot-and-mouth disease.
