Pray for a grain of help from the god…
　A festival to pray for grain productivity, Otaue-sai, was held at Kagoshima Shrine in Hayato, Kirishima City on June 20. Following rituals that included Ta no kanmai--a dance dedicated to the god of the shrine--around 50 rice planters comprised of both men and women planted rice seedlings in the shrine's sacred field, which was rain-heavy at times.
　The seedlings were offered by farmers in Kida, Kajiki Town in Aira City, who have connections with the shrine. In concert with a row of planters who planted the rice together by hand, the farmers from the Oji district of Kida sang a rice planting song that is said to have been sung for hundreds of years.
　The mayor of the Oji district of Kida, Mr. Imanishi Kaoru (69), said he hoped the rice would grow well, while also saying he would like to preserve the tradition for the future.
