学校存続へ甘い誘惑 奄美大島・宇検村
奄美大島・宇検村の阿室（あむろ）小中学校（小学生４人、中学生３人）は親子山村留学の募集を始めた。中学生が２０１２年度にゼロになると予測されており、危機感をもった住民が活性化対策委員会を組織した。
同村教育委員会によると、親子での転入が条件で最大５世帯。校区内の３集落の空き家を同村が改修し、Ｕ・Ｉターン者を受け入れるほか、助成金支給や家賃の一部補助で支援する。就職は活性化対策委が援助し、体験入学もある。
同校は島南西部の自然や伝統文化に恵まれた地域にある。スモモ刈りや海での水泳、豊年祭などが楽しめる。

Amami school sweet-talks families to avoid closure
Amuro Elementary-Junior high School (four elementary students and three junior high students) in Ukenson on Amami Island has begun to seek families who would like to move into the village with their children. The number of the school’s junior high school students is expected to be zero in the 2012 academic year, leading the residents to organise a revitalisation committee to avoid the crisis.
According to the village’s Board of Education, the programme requires applicants to move in with their children and will accept a maximum of five families. The village will repair vacant houses in three districts within the school zone for the families who would be either originally from the village or from other regions. It will also provide them with subsidies and pay part of the rent for the houses. The revitalisation committee will help them find jobs, and introductory courses will be available at the school.
The school is located in the southwestern part of the island, which is blessed with nature and traditional culture, and is a place where people can enjoy plum picking, swimming in the sea, and a harvest festival.
