鹿児島市で薩摩義士慰霊祭
現在の岐阜県にある木曽三川の治水工事（１７５４～１７５５）を成し遂げた薩摩義士の偉業をたたえる慰霊祭が５月２５日、鹿児島市平之町の平田公園であった。鹿児島、岐阜両県から関係者約５００人が参列し、義士らの遺徳をしのんだ。
工事の総奉行・平田靱負（ゆきえ）の命日に合わせ、鹿児島県薩摩義士顕彰会（島津修久会長）が毎年主催している。島津会長（７２）は「義士たちの不撓（ふとう）不屈の精神を後世に語り継ぎ、今後も岐阜の人たちとの交流を大切にしたい」と話した。

Floods of gratitude to Satsuma loyalists…
A memorial service for the Satsuma loyalists who completed the fatal flood control of the three Kiso rivers (1754~1755) in present-day Gifu Prefecture took place at Hirata Park in Hirano-cho, Kagoshima City on May 25. Some 500 people concerned, from both Kagoshima and Gifu prefectures, attended the ceremony in honour of the samurais’ great deeds.
The event has been conducted annually by the Kagoshima Prefecture Satsuma-gishi Kensho-kai (Chairman: Shimadzu Nobuhisa), a society dedicated to recognising the Satsuma loyalists, on the day of the anniversary of the death of the general superintendent of the embankment work, Hirata Yukie. Shimadzu (72) said they would like to hand down the stories of the indomitable spirits of the Satsuma mission throughout the future exchanges with the people in Gifu Prefecture.

Floods of[a flood of] は「多数［多量］の」。

徳川幕府は、地方の藩の反逆を防ぎ、政府の権力を維持するために様々な形の政策をとっていました。大名やその重臣の妻と子どもは江戸の在住が義務づけられる「人質政策」や、財政を弱体化させるための定期的な「参勤交代」などがその代表例ですが、木曽三川の治水工事も、徳川幕府が薩摩藩の力をそぐことを目的として命じた公共工事の一環でした。この工事は難航を極め、工事中に薩摩藩士５１名が自害、３３名が病死し、総指揮を執った薩摩藩家老の平田も、責任を取る形で工事完了後に自害しました。
しかし、この工事が縁で岐阜県海津市と霧島市は友好関係を結んでおり、定期的な交流が続けられています。
