桜島が再活発化
３日午前１０時１８分ごろと午後３時５４分ごろ、桜島の昭和火口（標高約８００メートル）が爆発した。鹿児島地方気象台は、５段階ある噴火警戒レベルを２（火口周辺規制）から３（入山規制）に引き上げた。同気象台は「今後も噴火に伴う噴石や火砕流に十分注意を」としている。

Exploding boom
On Feb.3, there were explosions at Mt. Sakurajima’s Showa crater (800m above sea level) at around 10:18am and 3:54pm respectively. The Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory has raised the five-scale eruption alert level to phase 3 (regulated entry to the mountain), from phase 2 (regulated entry around the crater). The authority has been issuing warnings on volcanic cinders and pyroclastic flows associated with eruption.

‘explosions’ は「爆発」。火山の「爆発、噴火」には通常 ‘eruption’ が用いられます。‘Showa crater’ は「昭和クレーター」。‘crater’ は「噴火口、（爆弾や隕石の衝突などでできた）くぼみ」のこと。‘respectively’ は「それぞれ」。

‘The … Observatory’ は「鹿児島地方気象台」。‘Meteorological’は「気象（学上）の」で、‘meteorology’（気象学）の形容詞形です。‘(has) raised … to ~’ は「５段階の噴火警戒レベルを～に上げた」。‘scale’ は「目盛り、物差し、段階、尺度」などの意味があり、類は ‘point’ ‘level’ ‘stage’ ‘phase’ など。‘regulated … mountain’ は「入山規制」。‘regulated … crater’ は「火口周辺規制」。‘regulate’ は「規制する、規定する」。




“The authority has been issuing warnings on volcanic cinders and pyroclastic flows associated with eruption..”

‘The authority’ は「当局」でここでは「鹿児島地方気象台」のこと。‘(has been) issuing … eruption’ は「噴火に伴う噴石や火砕流に対する警報を出している」。‘issue warnings on(against) ~’ は「~への警告を出す」。‘volcanic cinders’ は「噴石」。‘volcanic’ は「火山性の」。‘cinder’ は「（石炭、木材の）燃え殻」。
I.e. ‘(be) burnt to a cinder’ 「燃え尽きる」（completely burned）

‘pyroclastic flow’ は「火砕流」。‘pyroclastic’ は「火砕岩の」。‘flow’ は「流れ」。
‘pyro-’ は「火、熱、高温」などを表す接頭語です。
I.e. pyromania（放火狂、癖）pyrolysis（熱分解）pyrometer（高温計）

‘associated with ~’ は「～に関連する、結合する」。




タイトルの “Exploding boom” 　は「（ドーンという）爆発音」。「爆発的なブーム」という意味も掛けています。

ＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「天樟院篤姫」の放映で、桜島の映像も毎週全国のお茶の間に流れる状況はまさに「爆発的なブーム」だといえます。桜島にもそんな全国の熱い視線で火が付いたのかもしれません。その噴煙は、あたかも存在をアピールして拳骨を振り上げているかのようです。
