ランニング桜島
　第３０回ランニング桜島（南日本新聞社など主催）は２月２８日、鹿児島市の桜島溶岩ランニングコースであった。５キロ、１０キロ、ハーフマラソンの３コースに過去最多の４６８１人が出場、晴天に恵まれ思い思いのペースで走った。
　男女年代別２６種目で競い、ハーフマラソン男子は初出場の坂中伸作（鹿児島市）が１時間１０分４５秒で総合優勝、女子は蛯原奈津恵（宮崎市）が１時間２３分３６秒で連覇を果たした。

Running the volcanic heat
The 30th anniversary of the Running Sakurajima (sponsored by Minami Nippon Shimbun and others) took place at the Sakurajima Lava Running Course on February 28. A record high 4,681 people ran their choice of a five-kilometre, ten-kilometre, or half marathon course where they enjoyed running at their own pace under the clear sky.
Runners were categorised into 26 divisions according to their sex and age. Sakanaka Shinsaku from Kagoshima City, who participated in the event for the first time, won the overall title in men’s half marathon in 1:10:45, while Ebihara Natsue from Miyazaki Prefecture marked 1:23:36 to clinch her second consecutive title in the women’s half marathon.

On February 26, Kagoshima Prefectural Library held the Prefectural Libraries Conference in Kagoshima City where it unveiled its plan to introduce a cross-book searching system connecting 80 libraries throughout the prefecture in fiscal 2010.

〈タイトル〉
Running the volcanic heat：火山のように白熱する
Run a dead heat（互角の戦いを演じる；伯仲する）という表現をもじったものです。
筆者も鹿児島外語学院（GAiGO）の学生とともにハーフマラソンに参加しました。前後の天気が嘘のように青空が広がり、目の前にそびえる桜島の姿は迫力がありました。それにしても、トップの選手は単純計算すれば時速２０キロ近くで１時間以上走り続けるのですからたいしたものです。因みに筆者はマラソン初参加でタイムは約１時間５５分でした。
