Kagoshima’s 2009 - ‘Change’
In its first attempt, Kagoshima Prefecture Association of Small- and Medium-Size Enterprises asked its members for submissions of this year’s ‘kanji’ or Chinese character that symbolizes the year. Of the 320 members solicited, 54 gave answers. The number one kanji was ‘Hen,’ meaning ‘Change’ or ‘Strange,’ with five votes. Among the reasons were ‘change of the government’ or ‘social changes,’ while one said ‘there were so many strange incidents.’ It was followed by ‘Geki’ meaning ‘severe’ or ‘violent,’ and ‘Shin’ meaning ‘new,’ with three votes each. Those particular voters cited ‘any and all changes seemed severe’ or ‘new government,’ as well as ‘new type of influenza,’ as the reasons for their answers. Yotsumoto Shigemi, chairman of the Committee on Public Information for the association, said he hoped to look back on 2010 with more optimistic kanji.
