肥薩線「１００歳」　吉松駅で記念式典
１９０９年の肥薩線吉松－人吉間の開通からちょうど１００年目に当たる１１月２１日、湧水町のＪＲ吉松駅で全線開業１００周年記念式典があった。全線開業の年に生まれた同町の元国鉄職員、床並時雄さん（１００）に一日駅長を委嘱。出席者全員で同線の歴史をたどりながら、新時代に向けた発展を誓った。駅周辺では、空き地、空き家を活用した鉄道資料展や物産市など多彩な催しがあり、普段は静かな駅前に、かつてのにぎわいを取り戻した。

Hisatsu railway passes century mark
A ceremony was held at JR Yoshimatsu Station in Yūsui-cho on November 21 commemorating exactly the 100th anniversary of the Hisatsu Railway's opening of an extended line to Yoshimatsu and Hitoyoshi, respectively, in 1909. A former worker at the Japan National Railways (now JR), Mr. Tokonami Tokio (100), who was born in the year of the opening of the section, was commissioned to be the station master for the day. During the ceremony, all attendees pledged further development of the local line for the new era while tracing its history. In conjunction with the ceremony, various events were held, utilizing vacant lots and unoccupied houses around the station, such as a display of railway materials and a local product market, rejuvenating the once-bustling district.
