2009年7月22日の皆既日食

２１世紀最長となる皆既日食が７月２２日午前、喜界島や奄美大島北部で観測された。国内での皆既日食は１９６３年７月２１日に北海道東部で観測されて以来４６年ぶり。鹿児島県内の他の離島や本土でも、部分日食が見られた。皆既帯のトカラ列島や屋久島・種子島南部は雨模様で、皆既状態の太陽は見えなかったが、夜のように暗くなり、気温が下がるなど、皆既に伴う現象が観測された。

Rain eclipses solar show
The longest total eclipse in the 21st century was observed in areas such as Kikai Island and the northern part of the Amami Islands on the morning of July 22. It was the first time in 46 years that the total solar eclipse was observed in the country since 21 July, 1963 when it was observed in eastern Hokkaido. A partial eclipse was also observed in other parts of Kagoshima Prefecture including remote islands. In Tokara Islands and the southern part of Yakushima and Tanegashima islands where visibility of the total eclipse of the sun was prevented by the rain, it became dark as night with a temperature drop when the sun was fully hidden.

It … years：46年ぶりであった　　　when … Hokkaido：（1963年に）北海道東部で観測された

Where … rain：（トカラ列島や屋久島・種子島南部では）雨のために皆既日食が見られなかった。Preventは「・・・を妨げる、中止させる；（自己・病気等）を防ぐ」。　　　It … drop：夜のように暗くなり、気温が下がった　　　when … hidden：太陽が完全に隠れた時に。Hiddenはhide（隠れる）の過去分詞形。

Eclipseは「〈天体が〉〈他の天体〉を食する、覆い隠す；・・・に影を投げる（overshadow）；・・・を暗くする、・・・を覆い隠す」。

鹿児島県の離島や上海などには皆既日食を求めて日本全国（世界？）から人々が押し寄せましたが、残念ながらこれらほとんどの地域は全天が暑い雲に覆われ、皆既帯のほぼ中心に位置していた悪石島に至っては雷雨に見舞われ、壮大な天体ショーを目の当たりにすることは出来なかったようです。しかも、皮肉なことに数時間後には天気が回復しました。

筆者も鹿児島外語学院（GAiGO）の屋上から観察していましたが、数分間だけ雲の切れ間から部分日食を観測することが出来ました。この様子はGAiGO NEWSで動画をアップしていますのでご覧ください。
