ヤクタネゴヨウ　屋久島で「御用」
屋久島と種子島だけに自生する絶滅危惧種の五葉松「ヤクタネゴヨウ」の大径木を、地元の市民団体が屋久島町の西部地域の瀬切川流域で発見した。胸高直径２メートル１８センチで、現存するものでは最大。樹高は３０メートル。発見した市民団体代表の手塚賢至さん（５６）は、「屋久島では屋久杉に注目が集まりがちだが、ヤクタネゴヨウをはじめ素晴らしい自然がほかにもたくさんある。大切に守っていきたい」と話した。

Largest endangered pine tree found
A local citizen’s group has found a large ‘Yakutane-goyō’, a type of pine tree with five needles that is on the government’s endangered species list and is found only on Yakushima and Tanegashima Islands, in the Segire River area in western Yakushima town. The 30-metre tall tree has been revealed to be the largest living tree of its kind with a diameter measuring 2.18 metres at chest height. Mr. Tezuka Kenji (56), representative of the citizen group that discovered the tree, said the world heritage island has an abundance of great nature other than the widely recognised Yakusugi cedar, such as Yakutane-goyō, that needs to be protected.

‘a type … needles’ は「葉が5枚ある種類の松の木」。松葉は尖っているため ‘pine needle’ と言います。‘that … list’ は「（ヤクタネゴヨウは）政府の絶滅危惧種リストに載っている」。‘endangered’ は「絶滅の危機にさらされた」。

‘The … tree’ は「その30メートルの木（発見されたヤクタネゴヨウのこと）」。‘has … be ~’ は「～であることがわかった」。‘the … kind’ は「現存するその種の木では最大の」。‘of its kind’ は「同種類の」。‘with … height’ は「胸高直径2.18メートルで」。

‘representative’ は「代表」。‘the … island’ は「その世界遺産の島（屋久島のこと）」。‘an … of ~’ は「多数の、豊富な」。‘other than …’ は「・・・以外に」。‘the … cedar’ は「広く認識されている屋久杉」。‘that … protected’ は「保護する必要がある」。


タイトルの “Largest endangered pine tree found"　は「最大の絶滅危惧の松の木が見つかる」。

ヤクタネゴヨウは、鹿児島市の仙巌園（磯庭園）にも1本あり、周辺にある鶴の形をした石灯籠と「亀石」とともに、長寿の象徴である「鶴・亀・松」を演出しています。

GAiGOでは通訳ガイド研修として、今年の5月4日にマリンポートに寄港した大型客船「Diamond Princess号」の乗客を大型バスで市内観光案内しました。その際に事前に行った仙巌園での実地研修において、島津興業の方が詳しく説明してくださいました。
また、6月13日に参加した鹿児島大学留学生センター主催の「多国籍合宿」においても、この経験を生かして仙巌園についての発表を行いました。
