薩摩義士の功績後世に
江戸時代の木曽川治水工事を成し遂げた薩摩義士の偉業をたたえる、薩摩義士頌徳（しょうとく）慰霊祭が５月２５日、鹿児島市平之町の平田公園であった。鹿児島と岐阜両県から約６００人の関係者が参列した。岐阜県薩摩義士顕彰会の鬼頭善徳会長（６３）は「両県で姉妹県盟約が結ばれ約４０年。民間の交流が盛んになってきた。今後も若い世代に義士の功績を伝えたい」と語った。

In memory of Satsuma dedication
A memorial service for the Satsuma Clan’s expeditions dedicated to the completion of the flood control project for Kisogawa River during the Edo feudal period in the 18th century took place on May 25 at Hirata Park in Hirano-cho, Kagoshima city. Around 600 persons concerned from both Kagoshima and Gifu prefectures attended the ceremony. Mr. Kitō Yoshitoku (63), chairperson of Gifu prefecture’s society that honours the Satsuma loyalists, said it had been 40 years since the two prefectures forged a partnership pact and there had been growing personal contacts between the two regions. He said he hoped to convey to the younger generations the great feat of the then Satsuma people who dedicated their lives for the betterment of such a faraway place.

‘memorial service’ は「慰霊祭」。‘Satsuma Clan’ は「薩摩藩」。‘expedition(s)’ は「遠征隊」。‘dedicated to …’ は「・・・に捧げられた」。‘the … River’ は「基礎川の治水事業の完成」。‘flood control’ は「治水」。‘during … century’ は「18世紀の江戸（封建）時代に」。‘feudal’ は「封建制の；封建時代の；中世の」。‘took place’ は「開催された（was held）」。


“Around 600 persons concerned from both Kagoshima and Gifu prefectures attended the ceremony.”

‘persons concerned’ は「関係者」。‘person’（人、人間）の複数形は通常 ‘people’ を用いますが、法律用語や1人1人を強調するときは ‘persons’ という表現が用いられます。‘attended’ は「出席した」。

‘chairperson’ は「会長；委員長；議長」。‘chairman’ も一般的な表現ですが、最近では ‘policeman’ が ‘police officer’、‘stewardess’（スチュワーデス）が ‘flight attendant’（フライトアテンダント）と呼び名が変わったように、男女どちらにも共通して使用できる表現が好まれます。‘Gifu … loyalists’ は「薩摩義士を顕彰する岐阜県の会」。‘loyalist’ は「忠臣、（反乱時の）体制側［擁護者］」。‘forged … pact’ は「提携関係を結んだ」。‘forge’ は「〈鉄など〉を鍛えて〔・・・を〕つくる；〈計画など〉を案出する；（関係・友情など）を築く；・・・を偽造［模造、捏造］する」。‘there … contacts’ は「民間の交流が盛んになってきた」。‘personal contact’ は「個人的なつながり、市民レベルでの交流（civil exchange, grass-roots exchange）」。


“He said he hoped to convey to the younger generations the great feat of the then Satsuma people who dedicated their lives for the betterment of such a faraway place.”

‘convey … people’ は「若い世代に当時の薩摩の人々の偉業を伝える」。‘convey to …’ は「〈人・言動・芸術作品などが〉〈思想・感情など〉を・・・に伝える、伝達する」。‘feat’ は「偉業、功績（achievement, deed, accomplishment, exploit）」。‘who … place’ は「（薩摩の人々は）非常に遠くはなれた地域の向上のために生涯を捧げた」。‘dedicate’ は「〈人が〉〈時間・精力など〉を〔人・目的などに〕捧げる（give up）；打ち込む（devote）」。‘betterment’ は「向上すること；改良（improvement）」。


タイトルの “In memory of Satsuma dedication"　は‘in memory of …’ は「・・・に記念に［として］、・・・を追悼して（in commemoration of）」。

5月25日は、木曽川治水工事の中心となった総奉行・平田靱負の命日にあたります。平田靱負は、工事中に多くの犠牲者が出たことに対する責任を取る形で、工事の完了後に自害しました。慰霊祭は、鹿児島県薩摩義士顕彰会が約90年前から、戦時中の一時期を除いて毎年行っているそうです。世界は「恨み」や「憎しみ」の連鎖に満ち溢れていますが、このような「感謝の絆」で心を結びつけていきたいものです。
