霧島火口湖が謎の七変化
霧島・新燃岳（１４２１メートル）の火口湖「新燃池」の色が、昨年８月の噴火後に次々と変化している。普段は美しい青緑色だが、噴火後は白濁し、その後は黄緑色になり、４月末ごろから茶色に変わった。福岡管区気象台の大工豊地震火山課長は「水の色の変化は化学変化による。過去にもあったと聞くが原因は分からない」としている。現在は火山性地震や微動など活発化の兆しはないという。

Kirishima’s crater lake creating colours of mystery
Shinmoe Lake, a crater lake at Shinmoedake (1,421m) in the Kirishima Mountain Range, has been showing a series of changes in its colour since it erupted in August last year. After the eruption, the water – normally beautiful turquoise - became cloudy, then turned sulphur yellow, and finally changed to brown in late April. The chief of the Earthquake and Volcano Section of Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory, Mr. Daiku Yutaka, who attributed the variations of the water colour to chemical reaction, said the cause is still unknown although he heard similar events had happened in the past. He said the mountain has not shown signs of volcanic activity such as volcanic earthquakes and tremors.

‘crater lake’ は「火口湖」。‘mountain range’ は「連山（mountain chain, mountains）」。‘has … colour’ は「相次ぐ色の変化を見せている」。‘a series of …’ は「一連の・・・（a sequence[succession, chain] of）」。‘since … year’ は「昨年8月に噴火して以来」。‘erupt’ は「〈火山が〉噴火する；〈溶岩・熱湯などが〉噴出する」。

タイトルの “Kirishima’s crater lake creating colours of mystery "　は「霧島の火口湖が神秘的な色を創り出している」。‘mystery’ は「不可解な、不思議な；神秘的な、神秘につつまれた」。

その後、鹿児島地方気象台は２６日、この色の変化の原因は「水酸化鉄」の多量発生によるものだと発表しました。はっきりとした原因は不明ですが、火山活動とは関係ないとのことです。新燃池が「錆（さ）びた」という興味深いニュースでした。
