スモッグ注意報
鹿児島県は５月８日、県北部地方で光化学スモッグが発生し継続する恐れがあるとして、光化学オキシダント注意報を発令した。子どもや高齢者の屋外での激しい運動を控えるよう呼びかけている。発令は初めて。県環境保全課は目やのどに刺激を感じる場合、「水道水での洗顔やうがいを行い、最寄りの保健所・市役所などに相談してほしい」としている。

Smog alert
Kagoshima prefecture issued a photochemical oxidant warning on May 8 saying photochemical smog may form and persist for some time in the northern region of Kagoshima. In its first-ever warning, the authority urges children and seniors to avoid performing strenuous exercises outdoors. The prefecture’s Environment Preservation Division has also called for the citizens to wash their faces and gargle with running water, then consult the nearest health centre or city hall if they feel irritation in the eyes or throat.

‘issue(d)’ は「（人・機関が）〈宣言・命令など〉を出す、発する」。‘photochemical oxidant warning’ は「光化学オキシダント注意報」。‘saying ~’ は「～と言って、～として」。‘photochemical smog’ は「光化学スモッグ（oxidase smog, urban ozone, white smog）」。‘persist’ は「・・・に固執する；〈好ましくない現象などが〉（普通［予想］以上に持続する、残存する）」。‘for … time’ は「しばらくの間」。

‘In … warning’ は「それ（鹿児島県のこと）が出した初めての注意報で」。‘the authority’ は「当局（鹿児島県のこと）」。‘urge(s)’ は「（人・事が）〈人など〉に〔行為・状態へ〕促す；説得する（call for）」。‘avoid … outdoors’ は「屋外の激しい運動を避ける」。‘strenuous’ は「非常に活発な、精力的な、熱心な（active）；（仕事などが）非常な努力を要する、奮闘的な」。

‘The … Division’ は「県の環境保全課」。‘called for … to ~’ は「市民に～することを呼びかけた」。‘gargle’ は「うがい（をすること）」。‘running water’ は「水道水（tap water）」。‘consult’ は「（人が）〈専門家・権威者〉に意見を求める、助言［情報］を求める；（人が）〔対等の人・同僚と〕相談する（~ with）」。


タイトルの “Smog alert"　は「スモッグ注意報」。
