県立奄美図書館がオープン
奄美市名瀬古田町の鹿児島県立奄美図書館が２３日、オープンした。伊藤祐一郎県知事らがテープカットなどで祝った後、待ちかねた多くの市民らが入館し、初日は約１２００人が利用した。前身の県立図書館奄美分館が老朽化したため総工費１２億２０００万円をかけて移転新築した。蔵書数は２万冊増えて１４万４６００冊となった。

Amami library opens its doors
Kagoshima Prefectural Amami Library opened in Naze Furuta-cho in Amami city on April 23. After a ceremony that included a ribbon-cutting by Kagoshima Governor Yuichiro Ito and other guests to mark the opening of the library, a great number of local residents entered the much-awaited storehouse of information, with the first day seeing a total of around 1,200 people using the facilities. The library was constructed at a total construction cost of 1,220,000,000 yen after its predecessor, the Prefectural Library Amami Branch, had become superannuated. The new library now has a collection of 144,600 books, which represents an addition of 20,000 titles compared to its predecessor.

‘included’ は「・・・を含んでいた」。‘ribbon-cutting’ は「テープカット」。「テープカット」はいわゆる「和製英語」です。‘Governor’ は「知事」。‘to mark … library’ は「その図書館（鹿児島県立奄美図書館のこと）の会館を記念して」。‘mark’ は「・・・に印をつける；・・・を記念する、祝う（commemorate, celebrate）」。‘a … of ~’ は「大勢の」。‘much-awaited’ は「待ち望まれていた（hoped-for, long-awaited, long-expected, much-wanted）」。‘storehouse … information’ は「知識の宝庫（図書館のこと）（treasure box of ）」。‘with … facilities’ は「初日は約１２００人がその施設（図書館のこと）を利用した」。‘a total of …’ は「計・・・の」。

‘The … yen’ は「その図書館（県立奄美図書館のこと）は総工費12億2000万円で建設された」。‘predecessor’ は「前身；前任者（⇔successor）」。‘(had become) superannuated’ は「老齢［病弱］で退職した；年金暮らしの；老朽化した、時代遅れの（antiquated, decrepit）」。

‘collection’ は「収集品、コレクション：収蔵物」。‘which … predecessor’ は「（１４万４６００冊という数字は）前身（の図書館）と比べて２万冊多くなっている」。‘represent’ は「・・・を表す、象徴する；・・・に相当する」。‘addotion’ は「追加、不可」。


タイトルの “Amami library opens its doors"　は「奄美図書館が開館」。
