新入留学生へ「おじゃったもんせ！」／鹿児島市
鹿児島市国際交流市民の会（ＫＩＣＳ）は４月１８日、鹿児島大学と鹿児島国際大学の留学生に市内を案内する「街並みウオッチング」を行った。この春来日した留学生３３人にボランティアのスタッフが付き添い、徒歩や市電で各地を巡った。ドイツ出身の鹿児島大学生マヌエル・アルトマンさん（２４）は「鹿児島の街は興味深いものがたくさん。見て回ることができてよかった」と話した。

Ojattamonse – Welcome to Kagoshima
On April 18, Kagoshima City International Citizen’s Society (KICS) held a city walking event called ‘Machinami Watching’, in which citizen volunteers guided foreign students from Kagoshima University and The International University of Kagoshima through the city. A total of 33 overseas students who have just come to Japan in spring this year made their way around town by city tram or on foot escorted by volunteer staff. A Kagoshima University student from Germany, Manuel Altman (24), said he was able to see many interesting sights in and around the town of Kagoshima.

‘Kagoshima … Society’ は「国際交流市民の会」。愛称は頭文字を取ったKICSで、鹿児島外語学院（GAiGO）も協力団体として鹿児島市の国際交流イベントに携わっています。‘held’ は ‘hold’ の過去形で「開催した」。‘a city … event’ は「街を歩くイベント」で、「街並みウォッチング」の説明です。‘called …’ は「・・・と呼ばれる、名づけられた」。‘in which … city’ は「（『街並みウォッチング』において）市民ボランティアが鹿児島大学と鹿児島国際大学の留学生に市内を案内した」。‘in which …’ の文は独立した文にすると ‘In “Machinami Watching” …’ という主語で始まる文になります。


“A total of 33 overseas students who have just come to Japan in spring this year made their way around town by city tram or on foot escorted by volunteer staff.”

‘A total of …’ は「計・・・の」。‘overseas student(s)’ は「留学生（foreign student）」。‘made … town’ は「（色々な場所を）巡った」‘city tram’ は「市電」。‘on foot’ は「徒歩で」。‘escorted by …’ は「・・・に付き添われて」。


“A Kagoshima University student from Germany, Manuel Altman (24), said he was able to see many interesting sights in and around the town of Kagoshima.”

‘he … Kagoshima’ は「（彼は）鹿児島の街周辺の興味深いところをたくさん見ることができた」。‘be able to [do]’ は「・・・することができる、・・・する能力がある（can）」。‘be able to’ と ‘can’ は基本的な意味は同じですが、過去形の場合は意味に微妙な違いが生じます。‘could’ は単に「・・・する能力があった」という意味であるのに対し、‘was able to’ は「・・・する能力があってかつ実際に行った」ことも表すことができます。


タイトルの “Ojattamonse – Welcome to Kagoshima　は「おじゃったもんせ－ようこそ鹿児島へ」。

KICSが主催した「街並みウォッチング」は、午後から鹿児島市の「ボランティアセンター」で行われる「春の集い」の会場までをグループに分かれて案内するというイベントです。鹿児島外語学院（GAiGO）の学生とスタッフも毎年ボランティアとして参加していますが、今年は「春の集い」において当校の学生がアイス・ブレーキングを担当し、もはやGAiGOの定番となった「鹿児島弁クイズ」を披露しました。詳細は当校のホームページ上のブログ「GAiGO NEWS」をご覧ください。
