霧島連山で夏山開き
霧島連山の夏山開きが１２日、霧島市霧島田口の高千穂河原であった。神事では、一般登山客ら約６０人が無事故を祈り、きれいな山を後世に残そうと誓った。神事のあと、参加者は袋を手に登山道に入り、ごみを拾いながら高千穂峰や中岳へ向かった。

Kirishima Mountains open for public
A ceremony was held on April 12 at Takachihogawara riverbank in Kirisihma-Taguchi, Kirishima City to mark the start of the climbing season for the Kirishima Mountains. During the Shinto shrine ritual, around sixty amateur climbers prayed for safety during the climb and pledged to maintain the beauty of the mountains for future generations. After the ceremony, participants walked along the trails leading to the Takachihonomine and Nakadake peaks while holding plastic bags in their hands to pick up litter along the way.

‘A … held’ は「式典が行われた」。‘be held’ は「〈会・式など〉が催される、開催される（take place）」。‘to … Mountains’ は「霧島連山の山登りシーズンの開始を記念して」。‘mark’ は「・・・を記念する、祝う（commemorate）」。

‘During …’ は「・・・の間に」。‘Shinto … ritual’ は「神事」。‘ritual’ は「〈宗教的〉儀式（ceremony, rite）」。‘amateur climber(s)’ は「登山愛好家」。‘prayed for safety’ は「安全を祈願した」。‘pledged ... generations’ は「後世のために山々の美しさを保全することを誓った」。‘maintain’ は「〈人が〉〈ある状態・行為など〉を維持する、続ける、保つ（keep up）」。‘future generations(ages)’ は「後世」。

‘participants … peaks’ は「参加者は高千穂峰や中岳へと続く道を歩いた」。‘walk along ~’ は「～に沿って歩く」。‘peak’ は「峰；最高点、頂点」。‘while … way’ は「道沿いでゴミを拾うためのビニール袋を手に持って」。‘plastic bag’ は「ビニール袋」。‘vinyl’（発音注意！[vainl]）は「塩化ビニル；ビニル樹脂」といった主に化学用語として用いられます。
