知林ケ島に遊歩道／指宿市
環境省が進めてきた指宿市沖の無人島・知林ケ島の整備工事が完成、１１日に記念式典があった。島内を巡る延長約２・５キロの遊歩道や２カ所の展望台、休憩所を設置、手軽に島内散策が楽しめるようになった。干潮時に砂州が現れ、歩いて島に渡れる。式典終了後、市民や観光客らが次々と砂州を通り島内の自然や展望台からの眺めを堪能していた。

Chiringashima gets facelift
Maintenance work carried out by the Environment Ministry on the uninhabited island of Chiringashima off Ibusuki City has been completed and a memorial ceremony was held on April 11th. The island now has a 2.5km-long walking trail, two observation decks and a rest station, so that people can enjoy taking a leisurely stroll on the island. The island is connected to the mainland by a sandbar that appears during ebb tide so that people can walk to the island. After the ceremony, many citizens and tourists crossed the miraculous path of sand to enjoy the island’s many natural attractions and the scenic views from the observation decks.

‘Maintenance work’ は「整備工事」。‘carried … Ministry’ は「環境省が行ってきた」。‘carry out’ は「〈実験など〉を行なう（perform, conduct）」。‘uninhibited island’ は「無人島」。‘off … City’ は「指宿市沖」。‘memorial ceremony’ は「記念式典（commemoration ceremony）」。‘was held’ は「行われた、開催された（took place）」。


“The island now has a 2.5km-long walking trail, two observation decks and a rest station, so that people can enjoy taking a leisurely stroll on the island.”

‘walking … trail’ は「2.5キロの遊歩道」。このように単語をハイフン（-）で繋ぐことで形容詞的な表現として使うことができます。‘observation deck(s)’ は「展望所」。‘rest station’ は「休憩所」。‘so … island’ は「人々が島の中をゆっくりと散歩できるように」。ここでの ‘so …’ は「・・・するように、・・・するために」。‘take a leisurely stroll’ は「ゆっくりとした足取りで散歩する」。‘stroll leisurely’（そぞろ歩く）とも言えます。


“The island is connected to the mainland by a sandbar that appears during ebb tide so that people can walk to the island.”

‘The … tide’ は「その島（知林ケ島のこと）は引き潮時に現れる砂洲で陸地に繋がっている」。‘connect to …’ は「・・・に繋ぐ、接続する」。‘mainland’ は「〈島・半島に対する〉本土」。‘appear’ は「〈物が〉現れる、見えてくる（⇔disappear）」。‘ebb (tide)’ は「引き潮」。ただ、広辞苑で調べてみると、「引き潮」は「海面の表面が潮汐の作用で低くなること」。「干潮」は「潮が引いて海水面が最低に達した状態」とありますので、‘low tide’（干潮）というのがより正確な訳です。‘so that …’ は「そのため、その結果；・・・するために、・・・するように」。


“After the ceremony, many citizens and tourists crossed the miraculous path of sand to enjoy the island’s many natural attractions and the scenic views from the observation decks.”

‘citizen(s)’ は「市民」。‘the miraculous … sand’ は「奇跡的な砂の道（砂洲のこと）」。‘natural attractions’ は「自然の魅力」。‘attraction’ は「引きつけるもの、呼び物；魅力」。‘scenic view’ は「よい眺め」。


タイトルの “Chiringashima gets facelift　は「知林ケ島が化粧直しをする」。
‘facelift(ing)’ は「（顔のしわをとる）美容整形手術（rhytidectomy）；（建物などの）改装、模様替え；（自動車などの）モデルチェンジ」。
