与論町が「寄付条例」
与論町は２０日、さんご礁の保全などを目的とした「ヨロン島サンゴ礁条例」を制定した。民間からの寄付を財源として町づくり事業を進めるもので、県内では初の制定。町のホームページなどで全国発信し、寄付を呼びかける。

Yoron town enacts bill to save coral reef
On June 20, Yoron town on the southern island of Yoron, enacted the ‘Yoron Island coral reef ordinance’ that aims to promote public works, including the protection of its coral reef. The measure is designed for promoting town development based on contributions from the public as well as private companies, and this is the first time that the bill has been introduced in the prefecture. The town will ask for endowment nationwide primarily by printing the information on its website.

‘Yoron town on the southern island of Yoron’ は「南方にある与論島の与論町」。与論町の説明を加えています。‘enacted’ は「制定した」。類は ‘establish’ ‘constitute’ ‘legislate’ ‘institute’ ‘make’。‘coral reef’ は「珊瑚礁（さんごしょう）」。‘aims to promote public works’ は「公共事業を促進することを目的として」。「サンゴ礁保全など」は町の事業です。
‘including the protection of coral reef’ は「サンゴ礁保全も含めた」。日本語の文章でよく使われる「～など」は意味が曖昧な分、英訳するときには結構扱いに困りますが、‘including’ ‘such as’ ‘… and so on’ などの表現がこれに当てはまります。



“The measure is designed for promoting town development based on contributions from the public as well as private companies, and this is the first time that the bill has been introduced in the prefecture.”

‘The measure’（その条例）は “the ‘Yoron Island coral reef ordinance’”（ヨロン島サンゴ礁条例）のこと。その後の ‘the bill’ も同様です。‘designed for ~’ は「～のために作られた」。‘town development’ は「まちづくり」。‘based on contributions’ は「寄付金を基にして」。‘from the public’ は「一般から」。「民間」には ‘the private sector’（民間部門）という訳がありますが、これは ‘the public sector’（公共部門）に対する私企業（のサービス）を表します。ここでは行政以外を表して「民間」という意味で、一般市民も入っているので「一般及び私企業」という訳をしてみました。‘introduced’ は「（法律など）が施行される」。



“The town will ask for endowment nationwide primarily by printing the information on its website.”

‘ask for ~’ は「～をお願いする」。‘endowment’ は「寄付」。類は ‘contribution’ ‘donation’ ‘subscription’（定期的な寄付）。‘primarily’ は「主に」。類は ‘mainly’ ‘chiefly’ ‘mostly’ など。‘printing the information on the website’ は「ホームページ上に掲載する」。「ホームページ」は ‘website’。‘homepage’ は「ホームページ」の最初のページのことです。
