「尚子ロード」に記念碑が完成
徳之島の天城町与名間の尚子ロード記念碑横に、昨年１０月末に現役引退した女子マラソン・高橋尚子さんの功績をたたえる記念碑が完成し、１９日、高橋さんも出席し除幕式が開かれた。石碑は高さ１．１メートル、幅１．３メートル。フルマラソンに初出場した１９９７年の大阪国際女子や、２０００年のシドニー五輪での金メダル獲得、引退までの全記録を刻んだ。高橋さんは「島の皆さんに支えられ、思いっきり陸上ができた」と話した。

Monument for marathon runner Naoko erected
A monument that commemorates achievements by marathon runner Ms. Takahashi Naoko, who retired at the end of last October, has been erected next to the Naoko Road memorial in Tokunoshima Island’s Yonama district, Amagi Town. The unveiling ceremony which was held on February 19 was attended by Takahashi. The 1.1m-tall, 1.3m-wide monument is inscribed with all her records throughout her career as an athlete including her first full marathon at Osaka International Women’s marathon in 1997, winning the gold medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and her retirement. Takahashi said she was grateful for the islanders’ support who offered her a good environment where she could concentrate on training.

‘monument’ は「記念碑［塔、像、建造物］（memorial, commemoration）；遺跡、遺物（remain, ruin, relic, excavation, remnant）」。‘commemorate(s)’ は「・・・を〈儀式・祭典・建造物で〉祝う、記念する（honour）；追悼する」。‘achievement(s)’ は「業績、偉業、手柄（feet, deed, record, accomplishment, effort, triumph, result）」。‘(has been) erected’ は「〈家・像など〉が建てられる（built）；〈制度など〉が創設［樹立］される（set up, established, instituted）」。


“The unveiling ceremony which was held on February 19 was attended by Takahashi.”

‘unveiling ceremony’ は「除幕式」。‘unveil’ は「・・・のベール［覆い］を取る；・・・の除幕式を行なう；〈秘密になっていたもの〉を明らかにする（uncover, reveal, disclose）」。‘(was) attended by …’ は「・・・が出席する」。このような受身の形は ‘by’ 以下が ‘The ceremony was attended by him’ のように単に一個人を示す場合は用いられません。

‘The … monument’ は「その高さ１．１メートル、幅１．３メートルのモニュメント」。‘(is) inscribed with …’ は「〔石碑・金属板・紙などに〕〈名前・文字など〉が刻まれている（carved with）、記入されている」。‘athlete’ は「運動選手、スポーツマン」。


“Takahashi said she was grateful for the islanders’ support who offered her a good environment where she could concentrate on training.”

‘(was) grateful for …’ は「・・・に対して感謝する、うれしく思う（thankful）」。‘islander’ は「島の住民」。‘offer’ は「・・・を提供する、差し出す；・・・と申し出る、志願する」。‘concentrate on …’ は「〈人が〉〈努力・注意など〉を〈目的・仕事など〉に集中する（direct）」。

タイトルの “Monument for marathon runner Naoko erected”　は「マラソンランナーの（高橋）尚子選手のための記念碑が建てられる」。
