鹿児島神宮初午祭
鹿児島神宮初午（はつうま）祭が１５日、霧島市隼人の同神宮一帯であった。不況にもかかわらず、企業の協賛により昨年と同じ２５頭の鈴かけ馬が出場した。今年も加治木町木田の御神馬（しんめ）を先頭に企業や通り会、厄払いの同窓生などが人馬一体の踊りを披露した。陽気に誘われて約２１万人（実行委員会発表）が詰めかけた。

Horse-dancing festival
Kagoshima Shrine’s annual horse-dancing event, Kagoshima Jingu Hatsu-uma sai, took place at and around the shrine in Hayato town, Kirishima City on February 15. Despite the recession, a total of 25 company-sponsored horses adorned with bells, took part in the event, the same number as last year. Led by a horse from Kajiki Town’s Kida district that was dedicated to the shrine, company workers, shop owners of the street and alumni of local schools who wished to drive away evil spirits displayed dancing that perfectly matched with the horse’s movements. Enticed by warm weather, the event saw a crowd of around 210,000 people, according to the organiser of the event.

‘annual … event’ は「毎年恒例の馬が踊る祭り」。‘annual’ は「年1回の、毎年恒例の」。‘take(took) place’ は「開催される、実施される（be held）」。‘at … shrine’ は「神社とその周辺で」。

‘Despite the recession’ は「不景気にもかかわらず」。‘recession’ は「（一時的）不景気、景気後退、不況（depression, slump, stagnation, dullness）」。‘a total of …’ は「計・・・の」。‘company-sponsored’ は「会社提供の、会社主催の」。‘adorned with …’ は「・・・で着飾った（decorated with）」。‘take(took) part in …’ は「・・・に参加した（participate in, join (in)）」。

‘Led by …’ は「・・・を先頭に、・・・を団長として」。‘(was) dedicated to …’ は「・・・に捧げられた、奉納された」。‘drive … spirits’ は「悪霊を退散させる、厄払いをする」。‘display(ed)’ は「〈商品・作品など〉を陳列する、展示する（exhibit）；披露する（showcase）」。‘perfectly … movements’ は「（企業や通り会、同窓生などの踊りが）馬の動きと完全に一致していた」。

‘Enticed with …’ は「・・・に誘惑される（lure）、おびき寄せられる（attract）」。‘the event … people’ は「その祭りには約21万人の観客が来場した」。‘a crowd of ~ people’ で「～人の群集」。‘according to …’ は「・・・によると」。‘organise … event’ は「祭りの主催者」。

タイトルの “Horse-dancing festival”　は「馬踊り祭り」。
