宇宙デビュー！？
鹿児島県のシンボルマーク旗が、２２日以降に打ち上げ予定の米スペースシャトル「ディスカバリー号」に搭載され、日本人宇宙飛行士若田光一さんとともに国際宇宙ステーションで宇宙を旅することになった。若田さんの父親が曽於市大隅町出身であることから、県が宇宙航空研究開発機構を通じて米航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）に打診していた。旗は若田さんが地球に帰還後、ＮＡＳＡの飛行証明書が添えられて公式飛行記念品として県に返還される。

Kagoshima takes steps across the universe
It has been decided that a Kagoshima Prefecture flag will be brought into the International Space Station by Japanese astronaut Mr. Wakata Koichi aboard the U.S. space shuttle Discovery which is to be launched after the 22nd of this month. The local authority had been approaching the U.S. space agency NASA for permission through the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency since Wakata’s father is from the prefecture’s Osumi Town, Sou City. The flag will be returned to the prefecture as a gift of the memorable flight accompanied by an official certificate from NASA.

‘It … that ~’ は「（that以下のこと）が決まった」。‘(will be) brought into …’ は「・・・に持ち込まれる」。‘the International … Station’ は「国際宇宙ステーション」。‘astronaut’ は「宇宙飛行士」。‘aboard’ は「（乗り物に）搭乗して（on board）」。‘the U.S. … Discovery’ は「米スペースシャトル『ディスカバリー号』」。‘which … launched’ は「（スペースシャトルが）打ち上げられる予定だ」。

‘The local authority’ は「地元当局（鹿児島県のこと）」。‘(had been) approach(ing)’ は「〈人〉に（特別な目的を持って）接近する、話を持ちかける（speak to）、交渉を始める」。‘the U.S. … agency’ は「米航空宇宙局」。‘NASA’ は ‘the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’（米航空宇宙局）の略。‘permission’ は「許可（approval, consent）」。‘the Japan … Agency’ は「宇宙航空研究開発機構（JAXA）」。‘since’ は「・・・だから、・・・なので（as）」。


“The flag will be returned to the prefecture as a gift of the memorable flight accompanied by an official certificate from NASA.”

‘as … flight’ は「その記念すべき飛行の記念品として」。‘accompanied by …’ は「・・・を伴う、・・・が添付してある、・・・と同時に起こる」。‘official certificate’ は「公式認定証」。


タイトルの “Kagoshima takes steps across the universe”　は「鹿児島が宇宙へと踏み出す」。
