篤姫のひなまつり
南九州市知覧の商店街で、ひな人形の飾り付けが始まった。２月１日から県内６市と熊本県人吉市でスタートする観光キャンペーン「篤姫のひなまつり」の一環。知覧では３月末まで飾られ、キャンペーン期間中は、毎週日曜にぜんざいを振る舞うほか、琴演奏などのイベントを予定している。

Chiran Town dolled up for girl’s day
A shopping arcade in Chiran town, Minamikyushu City has begun a display of ‘hina’ dolls. The decoration is part of a joint tourism campaign for Girl’s Day, featuring Princess Atsuhime, to be held in six cities in the prefecture and Hitoyoshi City in Kumamoto Prefecture starting on February 1. In Chiran town, the dolls will be on display until the end of March, and visitors will be treated to sweet bean soup every Sunday, as well as events such as playing the Japanese koto harp which are expected during the period.

Shopping arcade‘ は「商店街（shopping centre[district, mall]）」。‘display’ は「陳列、展示、装飾」。

‘The decoration’（その装飾）は前行の ‘a display … doll’（雛人形の飾り付け）のこと。‘part of …’ は「・・・の一部、一環」。‘a joint … campaign’ は「合同の観光キャンペーン」。‘featuring …’ は「・・・を呼び物にした、特集した、主役にした」。‘to be held’ は「（これから先に）行われる予定である」。


“In Chiran town, the dolls will be on display until the end of March, and visitors will be treated to sweet bean soup every Sunday, as well as events such as playing the Japanese koto harp which are expected during the period.”

‘(be) on display’ は「飾られている、展示されている（(be) exhibited）」。‘until[till]’ は「・・・まで（ずっと）」で、ある時点までの「継続」を表します。「期限」を示す ‘by’ と混同しないように注意！‘(will be) treated to …’ は「・・・を与えられる、・・・でもてなされる」。‘A as well as B’ は、「Aと同様にBも、AのみならずBも」。‘such as …’ は「・・・のような」。前述のものに対して具体例を挙げるときに使います。‘(are) expected’ は「・・・が期待されている、予定されている」。


タイトルの “Chiran Town dolled up for girl’s day”　は「知覧が女の子の日（ひな祭り）に向けておめかしをする」。
‘doll up [for/in]’ は「〈主に女性が〉〔・・・のために／・・・で〕着飾る［っている］」。
