第六垂水丸沈没事故　合同慰霊祭
太平洋戦争中の１９４４（昭和１９）年２月６日、垂水市の垂水港沖で乗客を乗せて転覆、４６６人の犠牲者を出した定期旅客船、第六垂水丸（１２２トン）の遺族らが、今年の命日に３３年ぶりとなる合同慰霊祭を開催する。当日は遺族会を発足、遺族名簿の作成にも取り組むことにしており、関係者の出席を呼びかけている。事故当日、第六垂水丸には定員３４０人を大幅に上回る約７３０人が乗船していた。

Sunken Tarumizu Maru victims to be remembered for 1st time in 33yrs
Relatives of the victims on the ship that capsized during the Second World War on February 6, 1944, killing 466 people aboard the Number 6 Tarumizu Maru (122 tons), will hold the first joint memorial service in 33 years on the anniversary of the accident. The organisers are appealing to the survivors to attend the ceremony as it plans to establish a register of their names to set up a foundation of the bereaved families on the same day. The sunken boat was carrying around 730 passengers on the day of the catastrophe, well exceeding its capacity of 340.

‘Relatives of victims’ は「被害者の遺族（survivors）」。‘capsize(d)’ は「（船を［が］）転覆させる［する］」。‘the Second … War’ は「第二次世界大戦（the World War II）」。‘aboard’ は「（船・飛行機・電車などに）乗って、搭乗して（on board）」。‘hold ...’ は「・・・を開催する、行う」。‘first in ~ years’ は「～年ぶりに」。‘joint … service’ は「合同慰霊祭」。‘anniversary’ は「・・・周年記念日」。

‘The organis[z]ers … survivors to ~’ は「（合同慰霊祭の）主催者は遺族に～することを呼びかけている」。‘appeal to …’ は「〈人が〉〈人〉に・・・することを求める、懇願する（ask, call for）」。‘attend’ は「〈人が〉〈学校・儀式・会合など〉に（通例義務的に）出席する、参列する」。‘establish … names’ は「彼ら（遺族のこと）の名簿を作成する」。‘to … families’ は「遺族会を発足させるために」。‘foundation’　は「（基金によって運営される）施設、財団；基礎、基盤」。


“The sunken boat was carrying around 730 passengers on the day of the catastrophe, well exceeding its capacity of 340.”

‘The … boat’ は「その沈没した船（第六垂水丸のこと）」。‘passenger(s)’ は「乗客」。‘the catastrophe’ は「その大惨事」で、第六垂水丸の転覆自己のことを指します。‘well … 340’ は「（船が乗せていた約７３０人は）定員の３４０人を大幅に上回っていた」。‘exceed’ は「〈人・事が〉〈限度・制限など〉を超える（go beyond）」。


タイトルの “Sunken Tarumizu Maru victims to be remembered for 1st time in 33yrs”　は「沈没した垂水丸の被害者が３３年ぶりに追悼される」。
‘remember’ は「・・・を覚えている；思い出す」という意味ですが、「死者を追悼［慰霊］する」という意味にも用いられます。誰の言葉かは忘れましたが、「人は二度死ぬ」と言った人がいます。一度目は肉体的に死ぬ時、そして二度目は、周囲から忘れ去られる時です。確かに、偉大な人はいつまでも人々の心の中で生き続けるものです。つまり、「追悼」「慰霊」というのは、「あなたを忘れていません」というメッセージなのですね。
