指宿菜の花マーチ
第１７回いぶすき菜の花マーチ（同実行委員会主催）が２４、２５の２日間、指宿市であった。この冬一番の寒気が流れ込み、２４日は雪がちらついたが、過去２番目に多い延べ１万２２４人が、満開の菜の花や開聞岳、池田湖の景色を楽しみながら歩いた。参加者の中には、時折足を止め菜の花の前で記念写真を撮る姿も見られた。

Ibusuki Nanohana Walk
The 17th annual Ibusuki Nanohana March (hosted by the event’s committee) took place in Ibusuki City on January 24 and 25. Under cold wintry weather due to the coldest air of the season flowing into the region bringing a light snow on the 24th, the event drew its second largest number of 10,224 participants who enjoyed the scenery of Mt. Kaimon and Lake Ikeda from the road flanked with a carpet of bloomy field mustard. Some participants were seen to stop walking every now and then and took pictures in front of the yellow flowers.

‘annual’ は「年１回の、毎年恒例の」。‘hosted by …’ は「・・・が主催する」。‘the … committee’ は「（菜の花マーチの）実行委員会」。‘took place’ は「開催された（was held）」。


“Under cold wintry weather due to the coldest air of the season flowing into the region bringing a light snow on the 24th, the event drew its second largest number of 10,224 participants who enjoyed the scenery of Mt. Kaimon and Lake Ikeda from the road flanked with a carpet of bloomy field mustard.”

‘Under … weather’ は「寒い冬空の下」。‘due to …’ は「・・・の原因で、・・・のためで（because of, owing to, on account of）」。‘the … region’ は「その地域（指宿のこと）に流れ込んだその季節（冬のこと）一番の寒気」。‘bringing … snow’ は「（寒気が）少しの雪をもたらした」。‘the event … participants’ は「そのイベント（菜の花マーチのこと）には過去２番目に多い延べ１万２２４人が参加した」。‘draw’ は「〈人・物が〉〈人〉を引き寄せる；〈人・興味・注意など〉を引きつける、引き込む（attract）」。‘flanked with …’ は「・・・が側面に配置された」。‘a carpet of …’ は「一面の（a blanket of, sea of）」。‘field[wild] mustard’ は「ノハラガラシ（charlock）」などのアブラナ科の植物。「菜の花」を調べると和英辞典では ‘rape blossoms’ という訳が出てきますが、語源が全く違うにせよ、‘rape’ という単語からまず連想されるのは「強姦」というほうの意味ですので、特に詩などでは前者を代用することが多いようです。


“Some participants were seen to stop walking every now and then and took pictures in front of the yellow flowers.”

‘some … walking’ は「参加者の中には立ち止まる人も見られた」。‘some’ は「いくらかの、一部の」という意味ですので直訳すれば「何人かの参加者は～」となりますが、「～の人もいた」とするとより自然な文章になります。‘every … then’ は「（不規則な感覚をおいて）時々」。ジーニアス和英辞典によれば「頻度は seldom とsometimes の間」です。


タイトルの “Ibusuki Nanohana Walk”　は「指宿菜の花ウォーク」。
‘march’ は「行進、進軍」という意味で、デモ行進や、軍隊のように足並みを揃えて歩くことを意味します。
