鹿児島市で初雪
薩摩地方の山地を中心に１０日、積雪があり、鹿児島市では平年より４日遅い初雪を観測した。九州南部の上空１５００メートル付近に氷点下９度以下の強い寒気が流れ込んだため。海の便を中心に、一部交通の乱れもあった。鹿児島地方気象台によると、冬型の気圧配置は次第に緩むが、１１日午後から、再び強まる見込み。

First snow of the year
There was snowfall mainly in Satsuma region’s mountain areas on January 10, and Kagoshima City observed the first snowfall of the year four days later than on average. The snow was brought by a strong cold air mass of less than minus nine degrees Celsius that flowed around 1,500 meters above the southern Kyushu regions. Sea traffic was partly disturbed by the snow. The Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory says the winter pressure pattern will be gradually moderated but will strengthen again from the afternoon of the 11th.

‘snowfall’ は「降雪」。‘observed’ は「・・・を観測した」。‘four … average’ は「平年より４日遅く」。


“The snow was brought by a strong cold air mass of less than minus nine degrees Celsius that flowed around 1,500 meters above the southern Kyushu regions.”

‘cold air mass’ は「寒気（団）（cold-air system, body of cold air）」。‘minus … Celsius’ は「摂氏マイナス９度以下の」。「氷点下」はほかにも ‘sub-zero’ ‘below zero’ ‘below freezing’ などの表現パターンがあります。「摂氏（Celsius）」は ‘centigrade’ とも。‘above’ は「（表面から離れて）・・・の上に［の］、・・・より高い［高く］（⇔below）」。


“Sea traffic was partly disturbed by the snow.”

‘Sea traffic’ は「海上交通」。‘(was) (partly) disturbed’ は「（一部で）乱れた」。‘disturb’ は「〈人・物・事が〉〈治安・平静・秩序など〉をかき乱す、混乱させる（disrupt, confuse, upset）；・・・の邪魔をする」。


“The Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory says the winter pressure pattern will be gradually moderated but will strengthen again from the afternoon of the 11th.”

‘The … Observatory’ は「鹿児島地方気象台」。‘the winter … pattern’ は「冬型の気圧配置」。‘(will be) (gradually) moderated’ は「（徐々に）弱まる」。‘moderate’ は「〈風・痛み・怒りなどが〉和らぐ、穏やかになる（abate）；〈人が〉穏健になる」。


タイトルの “First snow of the year”　は「初雪」。
初雪とは言っても地面ですぐに溶けてしまう程度で、近年鹿児島市内で雪が積もったという記憶がありません。鹿児島のかつての風物詩であった桜島の火山灰が一面に積もっていたのも遠い記憶です。懐かしいですが、できればもう見たくない光景ですね。
