西郷どんは宮城県人！？
鹿児島市城山町にある西郷隆盛銅像（安藤照作・１９３７年建立）の“真のモデル”といわれる元山形県議の故・石澤宏太郎さんの写真など１７点が、仙台市の遺族宅で見つかった。西郷は写真を残さなかったため、安藤はイメージ作りに苦労し、制作に９年を費やした。孫の石澤徳幸（のりゆき）さん（６０）は「幕末から維新にかけての薩摩と庄内の奇縁の一つとして、祖父のことを知ってもらえれば」と話している。

‘Genuine’ Saigo found in Yamagata
Seventeen items including pictures of the late Yamagata Prefectural Assembly member Mr. Ishizawa Kotaro, said to be “the actual model” for the statue of Saigo Takamori (made by Ando Teru in 1937) in Kagoshima City’s Shiroyama Town, has been found at his family’s house in Sendai City in Yamagata Prefecture. It took Ando nine years to complete the statue due to trouble in creating his image as Saigo did not leave any of his pictures behind. One of Ishizawa’s grandsons, Mr. Ishizawa Noriyuki (60) said he hoped his grandfather would become widely known as one of the strange strokes of fate between the Satsuma and Shōnai Clans at the dawn of the nation’s modernisation.

‘including ...’ は「・・・を含めて（⇔excluding）」。‘the late ~’ は「故～」。‘prefectural assembly’ は「県議会議員」。‘the actual model’ は「実存のモデル」。‘actual’ は「（理論上・想像上・未来のことでなく）実際の、現実に生じた［存在する］（⇔potential）」。「遺族」はここでは単に ‘his family’（彼の家族）としていますが、ジーニアス和英辞典では ‘the bereaved (family)’ や ‘survivor’ といった訳が出てきます。前者は最近親族や友人が亡くなったばかりの人を指し、「先立たれた、取り残された傷心の」という意味で、ここでは不適当です。後者は、ロングマン現代アメリカ英語辞典に因れば “someone who is still alive when a close relative has died” とあり、文中の「遺族」に近いと言えます。

‘It … statue’ は「安藤氏はそれ（銅像の製作）の完成に９年を費やした」。‘It’ は天候・時間・距離などを表す主語として用いられます。‘due to …’ は「・・・が原因で（because of, on account of）」。‘leave ~ behind’ は「（人・名声など）を後に残して死ぬ；〈場所〉を後にする、通り過ぎる；〈相手〉を追い抜く、引き離す」。

‘One of …’ は「・・・のひとつ」。後に続く名詞は複数形になることに注意。‘become widely known’ は「広く知られるようになる」。‘as … Clans’ は「薩摩藩と長州藩の間の奇縁の一つとして」。‘stroke’ は「（運などの）訪れ、巡り合せ；一撃、打撃；脳出血。脳卒中（apoplexy）」。‘at … modernisation’ は「日本の近代化の幕開けに」。‘dawn’ は「夜明け、暁、日の出（sunrise, daybreak）；〔事の〕始まり、誕生、幕開け」。「幕末から維新にかけて」の時期は、日本の近代化への過渡期ですね。


タイトルの “‘Genuine’ Saigo found in Yamagata”　は「『本物の』西郷が山形で見つかる」。
「『本物の』西郷が山形で見つかる」。
西郷さんが写真を残さなかったというのはわりと有名な話ですが、城山の銅像のモデルが山形の人だったというのは一般的にはあまり知られていなかったのではないでしょうか。因みに安藤氏は石澤氏の「顔と後頭部を特に気に入った」とか（373news.com）。
