今年も“万羽ヅル”
出水平野で越冬するツルの今季３回目の羽数調査が１３日早朝、出水市内の２箇所の休遊地であり、１万２０２８羽を数えた。１万羽突破は１２季連続で、過去４番目の羽数。内訳はナベヅル１万３８３羽、マナヅル１６３２羽、カナダヅル６羽、クロヅル５羽、ナベクロヅル１羽、ソデグロヅル１羽。今季第一陣は、記録が残る１９６２年以降最も早い９月２８日に飛来した。

Herald of winter
The number of cranes wintering on the Izumi plain reached 12,028, according to research conducted at two resting places in Izumi City on the early morning of December 13, the third count this season. This is the twelfth consecutive season that the number of the migratory birds had exceeded 10,000, and the number was the fourth highest in history. The brigade consisted of 10,383 Hooded Cranes, 1,632 White-necked Cranes, 6 Sandhill Cranes, 5 Common Cranes and a Siberian Crane. The first flock of migrants of this year was observed on September 28, the earliest arrival since 1962 when records first began.

‘The number of …’ は「・・・の数」。‘winter(ing)’ は動詞で「冬を過す、越冬する」。‘reached’ は「・・・に達した」。‘according to …’ は「・・・によると」。‘conducted’ は「〈業務など〉が行なわれた（carried out）」。‘resting places’ は「休憩所、休遊地；墓場（grave）」。‘the ~ season’ は「（調査が）今季３回目の」。

‘This … season that ~’ は「（that以下）は１２季連続である」。‘twelfth’ は ‘twelve’ の序数表記ですが、意外と綴りを ‘twelveth’ と勘違いしている人が多いのでは！？ ‘consecutive’ は「（間をおかず一定順序で）連続した；〈論理が〉一貫した」。‘the … birds’ は「その渡り鳥（鶴のこと）」。‘migratory’ は ‘migration’（移住、転住）の形容詞形で「〈動物などが〉移住性の、定期的に移動する（⇔resident, sedentary）」。動詞形は ‘migrate’。‘exceeded’ は「〈人・物・事が〉〔数量・技能などで〕〈人・物・事〉を超えた」。

‘The brigade’ は「その旅団（鶴の集団のこと）」。‘brigade’ は「師団（division）の下の戦闘単位；団体、隊、組」。‘consisted of …’ は「〈団体・物・事などが〉〈人・部分・要素〉から成り立っていた（be composed of, be made up of）」。‘Hooded Crane’ は「ナベヅル」、‘White-necked Crane’ は「マナヅル」、‘Sandhill Crane’ は「カナダヅル」、‘Common Crane’ は「ナベクロヅル」、‘Siberian Crane’ は「ソデクロヅル」。ほとんどウィキペディアで調べました。

‘The … year’ は「今季［今年］最初の渡り鳥」。‘migrant’ は「渡り鳥；出稼ぎ［季節］労働者」。‘was observed’ は「・・・が観察［観測］された」。‘arrival’ は「［ある場所に］到着（すること）（⇔departure）」。‘when … began’ は「（１９６２年に）最初の記録が始まった」。


タイトルの “Kagoshima bloodless”　は「冬の使者」。
‘herald’ は「使者、お触れ役；先駆者；先［前］触れ（forerunner）」。
