夏の訪れを告げる六月灯が７月１日、鹿児島市の八坂神社を皮切りに始まった。夕暮れとともに家族連れらが訪れ、夕涼みを楽しんだ。六月灯は８月まで県内各地で開催される。
境内には金魚すくいや綿菓子などの出店が軒を連ね、華やかな浴衣姿の女性や子どもたちでにぎわった。上町傘鉾（ほこ）振興会は高さ７メートルの鉾を掲げ、子どもたちの健やかな成長を願った。

Lantern lights a prelude to summer in Kagoshima
The annual summer feature in Kagoshima, Rokugatsu-do festival, began at Kagoshima City's Yasaka Shrine on July 1. With the approach of dusk, families came flocking to the shrine to enjoy the cool evening breeze. The lantern festivals will take place throughout the prefecture until August.
The precinct of the shrine was lined with many stalls that provided various services, such as the game of goldfish scooping or sale of candy-floss, all of which attracted many women and children in yukata clothes. There was a parade with seven-metre-tall traditional Kasahoko floats decorated in glorious shades by the local Kanmachi Kasahoko Promotion Association, wishing for the healthy growth of children.
