消費者ネットワークかごしま設立
悪質商法や多重債務など消費者問題の広がりを受け、鹿児島県内の弁護士や消費生活相談員、消費者団体らが、被害防止や救済を目指す「消費者ネットワークかごしま」を１２月１日までに設立した。県消費生活センターと大島消費生活相談所に２００７年度に寄せられた相談総数は８３２７件で、うち架空請求相談は全体の２割を占める１８４６件、マルチ・マルチまがい商法の相談は前年比３割増の４５７件に上った。高齢者や若者が被害に遭うケースが目立つという。

Stand up for your property!
On December 1, in response to widespread consumer-related problems such as unscrupulous business activities and multiple debts, lawyers, consumer consultants and a consumers union set up a group called ‘the Consumer Network Kagoshima’ aiming to limit the damage and provide assistance to victims. The number of such cases reported to the existing prefecture Consumer Centre and the Oshima consultation office in 2007 was 8,327, of which fictitious claims accounted for 20% or 1,846. 457 claims sought for advice about multilevel merchandising, increasing 30% from the previous year. According to the authority, senior and young people are often targeted in those scam cases.

‘in response to …’ は「・・・に対応して」。‘widespread … problems’ は「広がる消費者関連の問題」。‘unscrupulous … activities’ は「悪徳商法」。‘unscrupulous’ は「破廉恥な、無節操な、無法な、不道徳な」。‘multiple debts’ は「多重債務（multiple consumer loans）」。「多重債務者」は ‘heavy debtor’ や ‘heavily indebted people’ など。‘consumer consultant’ は「消費生活相談員」。‘aiming to …’ は「・・・を目指して」。

‘The … 2007’ は「２００７年度に既存の県消費生活センターと大島消費生活相談所に寄せられたそのような問題（悪徳商法や多重債務のこと）の数」。‘existing’ は「現存の、既存の、現在の」。新しい「消費者ネットワークかごしま」と区別するためにつけています。‘of … 1,846’ は「そのうち（全８３２７件のうち）架空請求相談が１８４６件で全体の２０％を占めた」。‘fictitious’ は「〈物語が〉架空の、想像上の（imaginary）；〈名前などが〉偽りの、嘘の（false）」。‘account for …’ は「・・・を占める；〈人が〉〈事実など〉の理由を（十分）説明する；・・・の原因となる」。


“457 claims sought for advice about multilevel merchandising, increasing 30% from the previous year.”

‘Four … advice’ は「４５７件の相談はマルチ商法に関してであった」。文頭では原則としてローマ数字は用いず、アルファベット表記にします。ただ、この表記はわずらわしいので、特に数字が頻出する科学論文などでは、文頭に ‘A total of’（計・・・の）をつけたり、そもそも文頭に持ってこないように工夫したりすることが多いようです。‘multilevel merchandising’ は「マルチ商法（multilevel marketing[sales], pyramid selling[scheme]）」。


“According to the authority, senior and young people are often targeted in those scam cases.”

‘According to …’ は「・・・によると」。‘the authority’ は「当局（ここでは県消費生活センターと大島消費生活相談所のこと）」。‘(are) [often] targeted’ は「〔よく〕狙われる」。‘those … cases’ は「それらの詐欺事件（架空請求やマルチ商法のこと）」。


タイトルの “Stand up for your property!”　は「自らの資産のために立ち上がれ！」。
レゲエの神様・ボブ・マーレイの有名な曲 ‘Get up Stand up’ の歌詞 ‘Stand up for your right!’ のパロディです。
