吹上浜砂の祭典
第２１回吹上浜砂の祭典（南日本新聞社など主催）が２日、南さつま市のかせだドーム周辺などで始まった。今回のテーマは「時代に導かれたヒロイン」で、各時代で活躍した女性を中心に大小約８０基の砂像群と２万本近い花々が会場を埋め尽くしている。６日まで。

Fukiage Sand Festival
The 21st annual Fukiagehama Sand Festival, hosted by the Minami Nippon Shimbun and others, opened on May 2 around the Kaseda Dome in Minami-Satsuma City. Around 80 sand sculptures are on display at the venue, along with nearly 20 thousand flowers, under the theme of ‘the fated heroines of the eras’, featuring women who played key roles in each period of history. The event will run until May 6.

‘The … Festival’ は「毎年恒例の第２１回吹上浜砂の祭典」。‘annual’ は「年１回の、毎年恒例の」。‘’hosted … others’ は「南日本新聞などが主催する」。因みにイベントのホームページ（吹上浜砂の祭典実行委員会）では ‘Sand sculpture & Flower フェスタ’ というサブタイトルがついていました。

‘Around … venue’ は「会場には約８０基の砂像が展示されている」。‘(be) on display’ は「展示される」。‘venue’ は「開催地、発生地、現場、会場」。‘along … flowers’ は「２万本近い花々とともに」。‘under … eras’ は「時代に宿命付けられたヒロイン」。‘fated’ は「運命付けられた；宿命的な」。‘era’ は「・・・時代、（歴史上重要な）時代、時期」。「時代に導かれた」は「その時代に運命的に存在した」という意味で捉えました。
‘featuring … history’ は「各時代において重要な役割を果たした女性を特集して」。‘feature’ は「特徴づける；特集する；（映画・小説などの）主役にする」。‘play a key role(part)’ は「重要な役割を果たす」。‘key’ の代わりに ‘major’ ‘main’ ‘important’ ‘vital’ ‘crucial’ ‘prominent’ なども使うことができます。



“The event will run until May 6.”

「そのイベント（砂の祭典）は５月６日まで開催される」。‘run’ は「走る」というのが基本的な意味ですが、そのイメージから「（会社などを）経営する、（バスなどを）運行する」、「（川・水などが）流れる」、「選挙に立候補する」、「物事が続く、継続する」といった多様な意味を持ちます。



タイトルの “Fukiage Sand Festival”　は「吹上砂の祭典」。

今回の祭典は「愛・ときの礎－時代に導かれたヒロイン」をテーマに、篤姫やエリザベス一世、クレオパトラといった人物の砂像が造られていました。砂の祭典もＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「篤姫」に便乗したようですが、現在鹿児島県内は篤姫一色といった感じで、篤姫関連の石碑が建ったり、お土産グッズが売られたりしているようです。来年以降は一体どうなっていることでしょう。
