センター試験
大学入試センター試験が１９日と２０日、全国７３６会場で実施され、昨年より約１万人少ない５４万３３８５人が受験した。総募集人員に対する志願倍率は過去最低の３．０倍。鹿児島県内は１５会場で実施され、昨年より５６人多い７６６０人が受験した。県内では鹿児島大など１０の大学がセンター試験を利用している。

Unified exam held
A unified assessment test for university examinees, Centre Shiken, was held on January 19th and 20th at 736 venues nationwide and a total of 543,385 applicants sat for the test, decreasing by around 10,000 from last year. The ratio of candidates to the fixed number of university places was at a record-low of 3.0. In Kagoshima Prefecture, meanwhile, the number of examinees has grown by 56 to 7,660. In the Prefecture, ten universities including Kagoshima University are currently utilizing the test.

‘A … examinees’ は「大学受験者のための統一試験」。‘unify’ は「統一する、統合する」。類は ‘integrate’ ‘consolidate’ など。‘(was) held’ は「実施された」。類は ‘take place’。 ‘venues’ は「会場、現場」。‘applicants’ は「受験者、候補者」。‘sat for the test’ は「その試験（センター試験）を受験した」。‘sit for a test(exam)’ で「受験する」。‘take a test’ ともいいます。‘decreasing … year’ は「昨年から約１万人減少した」。

‘The … places’ は「大学の定員に対する受験者数の割合」。‘ratio’ は「割合」。類は ‘rate’ ‘proportion’ ‘percentage’。‘fixed number’ は定員。‘a … of’ は「過去最低の」。‘meanwhile’ は「一方で」。類は ‘on the other hand’。




“In the Prefecture, ten universities including Kagoshima University are currently utilizing the test.”

‘including …’ は「・・・を含めて」。‘(are) … test’ は「現在その試験を利用している」。‘currently’ は「現在」。‘utilize’ は「～を利用する、役立たせる」。‘use’ よりも正式な表現です。

第１回「共通第一次学力試験」が実施されたのは１９７９年。以来、「センター試験」への移行、２００１年４月の独立行政法人化などを経て、２００６年からは英語のリスニングテストが導入されました。以来、機器の不具合などの問題が毎年報道されますが、そもそも膨大な設備費をかけてまで実施するべきなのか疑問です。（リスニング・テストがあるにも関わらず未だに筆記で「発音問題」があるのは一体どういうことでしょう？）
小学校から英語を義務化する流れが出来つつありますが、「なんのために英語を勉強するのか」という根本的な問いに対する答えが事実上「受験」である以上、「ゆとり教育」の二の舞になる可能性は否定できません。受験システムの大本である大学受験が変わらなければ、「受験英語」の流れが変わることはないでしょう。
