鹿児島市で戦亡者慰霊祭
６４回目の終戦記念日の８月１５日、鹿児島市は同市照国町の探勝園で第二次世界大戦戦亡者慰霊祭を開いた。雨の降る中、遺族や市内の小中学生ら約３００人が参列し、犠牲者の冥福を祈って黙とうを捧げた後、次々と献花した。式典の中で、児童を代表して山下小６年の川越桂華さん（１２）は「今も世界各地で内戦や空襲があり、戦争は遠い昔の出来事ではない。平和のために努力することを誓います」と決意を述べた。

Kagoshima City held a memorial ceremony for the war dead from the Second World War on August 15 commemorating the 64th anniversary of the End of the War Memorial Day at Tanshoen in Terukuni, Kagoshima City. Some 300 people including the bereaved families and elementary and junior high school students in the city attended the ceremony in rainy weather to offer a moment of silence for the repose of the war victims then offered flowers one after another. During the ceremony, Kawagoshi Keika (12), a sixth grader at Yamashita Elementary school, stated her determination on behalf of the students saying: ‘War is not a thing of the distant past as we still have civil wars and air raids in every part of the world. 徳之島で「油田構想」
徳之島３町でつくる「徳之島愛ランド広域連合組合」（組合長・大久保明伊仙町長）は神奈川県の環境プラント製作会社「ブレスト」と協力し、廃プラスチックから油を取り出して再利用する「徳之島油田構想」に取り組む。経済産業省が「低炭素社会に向けた技術発掘・社会システム実証モデル事業」として採択した２７プランの一つで、４月から稼動する。大久保組合長は「焼却炉の稼働を減らし、徳之島を『環境の島』『エコの島』としてアピールしたい。住民の意識啓発にもつなげたい」と話している。

桜島に「叫びの広場」完成
２００４年に鹿児島市出身の歌手長渕剛さんがオールナイトコンサートを開いた同市桜島赤水町の採石場跡に８月１０日、赤水展望広場がオープンした。モニュメント「叫びの肖像」を中心に、緑地広場、あずまや、トイレがある。同日午前中のセレモニーでは森博幸市長が「…涙が出るほど、ふるさとが。そしてここで暮らす人々が愛おしくてたまらない」「いつかまた私はここに立とう」などと、桜島や鹿児島への思いが込められた長渕さんのメッセージを代読した。

Akamizu Observatory Square opened on October 10 at the site of a rock quarry in Akamizu, Sakurajima in Kagoshima City where a popular singer from Kagoshima City, Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi, held an all night concert in 2004. The newly-opened park has green place, an arbour and washrooms surrounding a monument called “Portrait of a Shout” which had been built to commemorate the legendary concert. 明桜館高校で新制服ファッションショー
鹿児島市の鹿児島西・甲陵高校を統廃合し新設された県立明桜館高校で８月４日、体験入学があり、県内から中学３年生約３５０人が参加した。学校紹介のほか、制服選定の参考にするファッションショーがあり、甲陵高生１６人がモデルになって夏・冬・中間服計４０点を披露した。学校は中学生による投票の結果も考慮し、８月下旬に新制服を決定する。

知覧特攻平和会館１５００万人突破
南九州市知覧町郡の知覧特攻平和会館の入館者数が８月７日、１９７５年の開館翌年に有料化されて以来１５００万人に達した。記念式典で霜出勘平市長は「見学者が平和、命、家族の大切さを学び、伝えていく施設であること願う」とあいさつした。同日、同館横のミュージアム知覧で、米軍機が空撮した旧陸軍知覧飛行場や同万世飛行場の航空写真などのパネル展も始まった。

天文館で広告統一実験
鹿児島市は８月５日、ＷｅＬｏｖｅ天文館協議会との協同で天文館本通りとぴらもーるで屋外広告物の規格を統一する社会実験を始めた。期間は９月１３日までで、通行人の意見を聞き、景観向上と同地区の活性化に役立てる。市は広告の設置者となり、広告料は同協議会に入り道路清掃やイベントなどに使用する。

鹿児島県などでつくる観光かごしま大キャンペーン推進協議会は、松本零士氏原作の漫画「銀河鉄道９９９」を活用した観光キャンペーンに取り組む。「宇宙・鉄道・夢」をテーマに、同作のキャラクターや鹿児島の観光地が登場する９９９秒（１６分３９秒）のオリジナルアニメを松本氏の原作で制作し、九州新幹線鹿児島ルート全線開業に向けＰＲする。アニメは鹿児島市の鹿児島ミッテ１０で９月９日上映するほか、各地で観光ＰＲに生かす。

Kagoshima Tourism Major Campaign Promotion Conference comprising Kagoshima Prefecture and other local entities will launch a tourism campaign using a popular graphic novel “Galaxy Express 999” created by Mr. Matsumoto Reiji. Under the theme of “Space, Railway, Dream”, it will create a 999-second (16min.39sec.) long original animated film based on a story by Matsumoto that features characters from the same comics as well as Kagoshima’s tourist spots in an effort to publicise the Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima route ahead of the opening of the full route. The movie will be released on September 9 at Kagoshima MITTE 10 in Kagoshima City, which will also be used in promotion campaigns throughout every region.
